Congratulations on all of your hard work Joel!

Full Name:

Joel Angel Saldaña Perez

Upward Bound Program at Arizona Western College
What factors are most important to you in deciding on a college?

Major/Field of Study, College Cost, Location, Scholarships, Internships, Programs.
Have you thought of a college you would like to attend yet? If so, where?

Yes.  The University of Arizona.
Have you decided on a major?  If so, what?

Yes.  Physiology (Pre-Nursing) and French.
Why are you interested in this major?

I want to eventually become a D.O. (Doctor of Ostheopathic Medicine) and help people, especially those with few or no means of attaining adequate healthcare.  Also, by knowing more than one language, I could be able to communicate with more people and have a broader area of choice for work location.

Favorite Subject(s):

 Mathematics.

Favorite Book:

Harry Potter.

Favorite Quote:

"Throughout the centuries there were men who took first steps down new roads armed with nothing but their own vision." (Ayn Rand, 'The Fountainhead')

Favorite Food:

Lasagna

Favorite Artist/Musical Group:

Latin Music

Favorite Movie:

Chasing Papi

Favorite TV Show:

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Do you have a job, if so what?

Yes, Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

After school, I like to get home and relax a little.  I might watch TV, do homework, read a book, write poetry, or be on the computer researching, typing or just browsing the internet.  In the evening, I go to the gym for a Zumba Fitness class for an hour.  After that I come home, finish any unfinished homework or watch a movie for a while before going to bed.

Is there anything else you want to share?

I have a very wild imagination.  Before my Junior year of high school, I used to check out books out of the library and I would read on the bus, during lunch, during my free time at school, or at home when I didn't have any homework to do.

A Statement from Joel's Program Director:

Joel came to the United States when he was ten years old from Mexico.  Within a few years he mastered the English language and became a model student.  His teachers describe him as awesome, motivated, polite, and determined.  When I interviewed him for Upward Bound as a freshman in high school he already had set his goal to receive a PhD or MD.  Joel has attended summer camp each year and always enjoys the activities, but also absorbs all the information he can from the teaching staff.  As the first in his family to attend college he has many goals.  He wants to study language and is now tri-lingual in Spanish, English, and French.  However, he has always wanted to be a doctor.  Whatever he decides, Joel will pursue the knowledge and make a difference in his world.
